Introducing Wines for the Historian and the Honey Lover...

MEADS

The history of mead is intertwined with that of man. It is the oldest fermented drink and has been a part of many different cultures. To the Greeks, it was "The Nectar of the Gods." For the Hindus, it insured fertility and for the Moors, it was an aphrodisiac. The word Honeymoon comes from a pagan custom of drinking mead during month long wedding celebrations to insure fertility and the birth of sons. The Vikings believed warriors would get mead in Valhalla and the Celts believed there was a river of mead flowing through Paradise. Unconnected cultures at various periods in history have associated Mead with fertility, sex, love, poetry and health. It has been enjoyed throughout time by many people to include Kind Arthur, Plutarch, King Midas, St. Finnian, Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth and the fictional characer of Beowulf.
